A note on the impossibility of a set of constitutions stable at different levels

Résumé. Nous démontrons qu'il n'existe pas d'ensemble de correspondances de choix social neutres et différentes, telles que, si proposées à un groupe d'individus, on obtient une unique société stable possible. Affaiblir cette condition de stabilité peut permettre de ré-introduire une possibilité. Cependant cette solution ne se révèle que transitoire si on en attend une solution au problème de la multiplicité de solutions en théorie des choix sociaux. Ce dernier résultat est obtenu en généralisant le concept de stabilité à un niveau supérieur.

Abstract. We demonstrate that no set of neutral and different social choice correspondences exists, so that, if proposed to a group of individuals, it leads to a uniquely defined society, stable in an intuitive sense. Weakening this latter condition makes it possible to reintroduce possibility. This appearance reveals itself as only transitory if seen as a way to escape the multiplicity of solutions problem in social choice theory. This last result is obtained by generalizing the concept of stability to higher levels.
