Are consumers forward-looking ?
Abstract.
This paper investigates the stability of households consumption behaviour in France through a procedure
for discriminating between feedback and feedforward models connected to the notions of
encompassing and invariance initially proposed by Hendry (1988). This approach examines the repercussions
of the instability of the marginal process for income on the stability of the conditional models of
consumption. In this contex, the invariance of the feedback model supporting the Keynesian leads to
a rejection of the feedforward model sustaining the Permanent Income Hypothesis and conversely. Our
results show that consumers are forward-looking in France whatever the form of the forward model one
chooses since after 1992, our expectational models for consumption seem to fit better, to be more stable
and able to generate better forecasts that the conditional model.
