Abstract.
This paper raises the question of the meaning of intertemporal equilibrium, within the two
frameworks of incomplete markets and of temporary equilibrium. More precisely, this question
concerns the relationship between the mathematical object "intertemporal equilibrium" pertaining
to these theory and the real evolution of the market, evolution which is sequential. This
question belongs to the conception according to which the economic dynamics generating the real
evolution is governed by agents expectations that are represented by temporary equilibria. The
first purpose of the paper is to shed light on this conception by the formal study of a simple
case of sequential market, the second to present the problems, unusual in general equilibrium
theory, raised by the mathematical formulation. The decision process generating the real
evolution is represented by an intermediate structure, named transitoir, structure that condenses
individual expectations as a transitory equilibrium and so forth is a static expression of these,
concerning only the current period, but sufficient to determine the evolution. As such, the real
evolution appears like a sequence of transitory equilibria which condense the temporary
intertemporal equilibria of the expectations. From the mathematical point of view, the link
between the two types of equilibria, transitory and temporary, is based on the forward looking
optimisation procedure occuring in the Bellman equation of dynamic programming. Thus, the
transitory equilibrium concept belongs to the two frameworks of intertemporal equilibrium.
