Abstract.
The first steps in the construction of modern financial theory rose in France during the second half of
19th century. In 1870, the work of Henri Lefèvre, a French actuary, aimed at the creation of a
new field of theoretical economics : financial theory. In a first step, he operated a synthesis of the
work achieved by Auguste Comte and biological theories and built a theoretical norm in order to identify
the elements that contribute to the economic development of societies. He thus put forward the pivotal
role that financial markets have to play in an exchange market economics -and that influenced Walras'
approach of the Stock Market. In a second step, he elaborated the functioning of exchange market, and
stressed the need for graphical instruments that are still used nowadays. This paper thus aims at showing
how the financial theory was thought at the end of the 19th century and how the construction
of theoretical and graphical tools could not be separated from underlying ideological points of view.
