The effects of internal and external information sources on the innovation Process : An econometric
analysis at the firm level
Abstract.
It has become an economic challenge for most of industrialized countries to understand the sources of the
innovation process in an economic world subject to rapid transformations and globalization. Technological
change can assume many forms, including the creation of a new process or a new product but also the
adoption of an existing technology. Each mode of innovation does not require the same knowledge.
Consequently, the way a firm innovates strongly depends on the informational sources it uses. The goal of
the article is to explore the relationship between the information sources and different ways of
innovating, and shows that external sources of information play globally an important role in the
innovation process, but differ according to the way a firm innovates. Different information networks may
thus lead to constrasted patterns of innovation.
