Exchange rate regimes and international business cycle
d'investissement.
Abstract.
This paper adds to the empirical literature on business cycle properties
across exchange rate regimes. Earlier research examined the consequences of
the Bretton Woods system on international stylized facts. However, the
conclusions might be biased by the oil shocks at the beginning of the
flexible exchange rate period. I therefore investigate the impact of the
European Monetary System (EMS) on international fluctuations. I find that,
in contrast to the real exchange rate, the volatility of fundamentals is
barely affected by the exchange rate regime. Moreover, fixed rates are
associated with enhanced comovement of output, consumption and investment.
