Terms of trade, wage bargaining and international business cycles
production.
Abstract.
The role of the term of trade in labor market fluctuations is a largely debated issue in international
macroeconomics. The enlargement of the RBC methodology to both non-walrasian and international models
provides a useful framework to tackle this question. Beyond studying the cross dynamics between employment,
wages and terms of trade, we are interested in replicating the unemployment and output co-movement accross
countries. We show that search labor-market in a two-good two-country model provides new insights about the
international propagation of fluctuations. It generates positive correlations of output, employment and
investment across countries which are higher than the one of consumption. The wage, employment and terms of
trade cross-dynamics are the heart of these features. The stylized facts that we reveal on these dynamics
match the theoretical ones.
